Abraham Lincoln High School Continuing the “Tradition”

Hosting the 39th Annual Les Mattocks Wrestling Tournament.

DENVER – Abraham Lincoln High School will host the 39th Annual Les Mattocks Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 27, 2024. 34 teams across Colorado will be competing, this is one of the largest wrestling tournaments in Southwest Denver. Head Coach Max Marquez was coached under Mattocks during his high school wrestling career and is continuing the “Tradition” of excellence in Lancer Athletics. This year Lincoln has three of the top wrestlers in the State for their weight class division.

Les Mattocks served as president of the Colorado Wrestling Coaches Association from 1999-2001, coached in the All-State Games in 2000 and 2004, and was selected as the Colorado Wrestling Man of the Year in 2000. A total of 83 of his wrestlers have qualified for the state tournaments. 

Mattocks, a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School and UNC. He became the head coach at Denver South (1970-1975) and then assisted Hall of Fame coach Joe Klune at Lincoln (1976-1980). In 1981 he took over the coaching reins at his alma mater. While at Lincoln, Mattocks won five DPL championships, was league runner-up eight times, and won nine District championships. He was named the DPL Coach of the Year three times (1986, 2001, and 2002). In 2006 Les was awarded the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award and is Part of the National Wrestling Hall Of Fame.
