Cap Decorating Guidelines 2023

Lincoln students should follow the following rules when decorating their graduation cap. Failure to follow these rules will result in a replacement cap being given to you during commencement at your own cost!

  • No offensive language, sayings, nicknames, pictures or lyrics on cap. Do not use your cap to bully or mock other graduates/teachers.
  • No excessive 3D objects may rest on the cap – think ¼ inch or smaller
  • ALL decorations MUST end at the edge of your cap. No decorations should spill over.
  • Your cap CANNOT make noise. No bells, horns, or anything that makes noise
  • DO remember that this is a formal, traditional celebration in front of community members, families, friends and the teachers who have helped you make it this far. Express yourself and have fun, but maintain the decorum of the ceremony.

It is appropriate to put the following on your cap.

  • Thank a parent, grandparent, teacher, guardian
  • Show recognition of your cultural traditions and upbringing
  • Recognize the university you will be attending
  • Recognize a group or organization you were involved in while at Lincoln

Students, we highly suggest you trace your cap onto cardboard and decorate the cardboard. In case you make a mistake you can start over with a new piece of cardboard. We will not furnish new caps if you mess yours up decorating. After you decorate it, stick it to your cap with double-sided tape or Velcro stickers. Velcro tape can be purchased at any fabric store, Target, Wal-Mart and throughout many CVS and Walgreens stores.

Administration will reserve the right to disallow anything that is not considered appropriate for commencement ceremony.
